A Little Lust In Translation

LUST IN TRANSLATION

"Cross a meandering playboy with a studious control freak driving cross country and you have a plot that is fresh, fun, and blatantly sexy!" 5 stars, Slick Reads at Guilty Pleasures

**Blog Exclusive Excerpt**

The sky darkened and the storm that had been threatening for the past few hours loomed in the distance. Xavier must have sensed it too. He’d raised the roof of the convertible, closing them in the small space with no distractions from the conversation they needed to have. But even with over an hour of driving behind them, she still hadn’t figured out how to talk him into getting her to Oregon as fast as possible.

She turned in her seat and pulled out her travel folder, then placed it on her lap. Inside were the maps of three different routes they could take, with hotel stops marked along the way. She’d taken the drive so many times she barely needed them anymore, but it was always best to be prepared.

“What do you have there?” Xavier’s deep voice slid over her like molten chocolate over a truffle.

Truffles. Like the white chocolate version Allison had ordered for the wedding. Jaime blinked and steered her mind back to business.

“Driving directions. Since we got a late start and it looks like a storm up ahead, I think we should stop in Pittsburgh for the night. If the weather holds we might be able to make it to Ohio.”

His hands tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. “How long were you thinking it would take us to get across the country?”

“Less than three days if we drive in shifts and get lucky with the weather. I don’t mind driving in the dark as long as it’s clear, but when it storms I’d rather be inside.”

“I don’t think we should get too caught up in the details, J’aime. It’s far too restricting.”

“It’s much more efficient this way.”

The muscles in his neck flexed as he swallowed. “I think we should stop sooner rather than later. That way we can get a few things straight before we head out tomorrow.”

Her eyebrows shot up. “Such as?”

“I’m not driving three thousand miles to get somewhere; I actually want to see the country. I won’t be driving at night, or in a hurry. I want to enjoy the trip. You should too.”

She opened her mouth to speak, but wasn’t sure which argument to make. It wasn’t that she was against enjoying the trip. It just didn’t serve the purpose of getting to Oregon.

She had to get there soon so she could start networking her way into a teaching position and find an apartment. She’d been on her own far too long to live at home for more than a couple weeks.

“This is an adventure. When was the last time you did something exciting? Something just to enjoy it?”

She couldn’t come up with a single instance, but would die before admitting it. “My life has plenty of excitement.”

He smirked. “Tell me about it.”

Clearing her throat, she offered up the graduation party she’d chaperoned, carefully omitting the fistfight that had broken out in the parking lot.

“That’s work. Do you ever enjoy yourself away from the kids?”

Again she felt like a fish, her mouth gaping open. “I run and I taught rock-climbing classes.” He looked thoroughly unconvinced she’d ever experienced elation. “Teaching is fun for me.”

“But what do you do for you, J’aime?”

Lightning flashed in the distance, illuminating angry clouds and a horizon blurred by driving rain. Electricity crackled in the atmosphere, the current flowing through the dense, humid air. She spied a road sign as they barreled down the freeway. Ten miles to Bedford. She checked her notes to see if they could stop there.

“What are you doing?” His voice held a mocking quality she didn’t appreciate.

“Looking to see if there is a Holiday Motel in Bedford. The weather looks pretty nasty up ahead.” The thunderous skies above them loomed ominously, waiting to release their fury.

“We’re not staying in a motel.”

“I have a preferred-customer account there. For every ten nights I stay, I get a night free.” Jaime rifled through the papers, looking for the list of participating motels along their route. “There isn’t a Holiday Motel in Bedford, so we’ll have to keep going. The closest one is in Mt. Pleasant, but that is barely an hour from Pittsburgh, so we might as well go all the way.”

“J’aime, can I see that folder?” He held out his large hand, never taking his attention from the road.

“While you’re driving?” To emphasize her point, large raindrops began to splatter on the windshield.

“I want a better look at that map on the top of the page.”

Reluctantly, she slipped the folder into his hand. He set it on his lap and pressed a button to lower the window. Before she could decide what he was up to, he’d slid her folder out the cracked window.

“Hey!” she yelled, the seatbelt cutting into her shoulder as she turned to watch the pages fluttering behind them. “That was mine. And littering is a huge fine, I’ll have you know.”

“Do you feel better?” A drum roll of thunder underscored his words.

“Better? I’m in a car with a crazy man who just dumped our itinerary in the middle of the road.”

For Kicks

Breeze opened the door slightly and stood in the gap. “You know it’s after midnight?”

“I was waiting for them to leave. I don’t think the guy on the phone bought my cover. They’re together, right?”

“Who?” she stalled, wanting to know just what Logan was after before she let him into her home.

“The big one is your assistant. I recognize him from the walk through.” He cocked his head to the side, his brown eyes twinkling. “Let me in, Breeze. We need to talk.”

“Maybe when I get back. It’s really not appropriate.”

“Why not?” He braced a hand on her doorframe and leaned closer.

“It’s unprofessional for us to see each other personally when we work together.”

“We don’t work together.” He shook his head.

“We spent the whole day at work together,” she reminded him. “And what’s in your hand? More work?”

“But it’s not like you work for me.”

“You’re splitting hairs. It doesn’t matter anyway. I’ll be gone for almost a month. And when I get back I’ll have a lot of catching up to do.” She ran a hand through the mass of curls, wishing she’d looked in a mirror after removing the clip. “And then I’ll be running into the holiday season. It’s not fair to ask you to wait.”

“I’m not planning on waiting.” He pushed her door open with his hand but stayed on the landing.

“You’re not coming in. I’m not someone you can call at midnight and think coming over means…that we’re going to…” She waved her hand through the air, trying to make her point and push away the erotic scenes unfolding in her mind.

“To what, Breeze? What is it you think I want to do?” He stepped closer, his toes on the edge of her welcome mat. He probably expected her to step away, but she held her ground and his gaze.

“I don’t care.” She lifted her stubborn chin.

He dropped his voice to a deep whisper. “Oh, but you do. You want to know if what I had in mind matches up with what’s running through your thoughts right now.”

Her skin flushed a telltale pink, letting Logan know he was right. He knew he had one shot to get her to open her mind to the possibility of them together before she disappeared for a month. He needed her to agree to let him call and visit and make sure she took some downtime. Though his brief glimpse at the schedule Mendelssohn’s had faxed him showed little room for fun.

“You want me to go?”

She closed her eyes and nodded slowly. He reached for her hand and pulled it to him while she stayed still as a statue. He raised her wrist to his lips and felt the pulse point thrum.

“You don’t want me to leave yet.”

Her eyes fluttered open, the icy color melting into a blue like the center of a flame. His temperature rose at the sight, heating his blood to simmering.

“Let me in, Breeze.” He clutched the stack of promotional photos tighter in his hand and considered throwing them to the ground.

She stepped aside, each breath deep and labored. He stepped into the room and she backed against the door and then closed it. The only light in the room came from the glow of a large fish tank that was filled with greenery and gurgled softly.

She watched him intently, eyeing the photos as he set them on her suitcase. “I thought I might need a cover. You don’t really need them.” He stepped to her and she pressed herself tighter against the door. He lifted a hand to her cheek and slid his fingers along the smooth skin.

Her eyes opened wider, showing so much emotion he couldn’t guess what it all meant. Stunned, mesmerized, frightened. Wanting to calm her, he didn’t move closer, but instead indulged his curiosity and slid his fingers into her thick curls.

There wasn’t a tangle in the silken strands, just tight, smooth ringlets. Her hair intrigued him. It was so beautiful, yet she kept it twisted and hidden most of the day. The smooth glide of his fingers held an erotic effect he hadn’t counted on, but then so did most things about her.

“Logan?” she whispered, peering up at him.

“No one will know, not unless you want them to.”

“I can’t risk it. I’m so close to getting everything I’ve ever wanted.”

“Me too.” Fisting his hand in her hair, he tipped her face to him, looking in her eyes so there would be no mistaking just what he meant. And then he lowered his lips to hers and showed her.

HOT SALE, HOTTER HERO!

Compromising Positions is on sale for 99¢ this week only! Which means... a ton of social media promo for yours truly. I'm a big fan of online conversations, not so much about buy my book. So, to keep myself entertained we made up some super fun promo graphics.

It's a funny book, so the graphics match. Kind of. I'm still wondering if we went too far with the Kama Sutra images. But hey, it's a Kama Sutra couples yoga class. Totally legit to illustrate that, right?

Finding the vectors to put on the graphics was hilarious. Do we use ones with two colors? Stick figures or life-like. And... OMG these are actual people! We could not go there, because Facebook jail. Not to mention my readers are all about using their imaginations.

Be honest peeps. Did I take it too far?
Those of you who've already met David & Sophie, it totally fits, right?
Which one is your favorite?

COMPROMISING POSITIONS

"Compromising Positions would have to be one of the best contemporary romance novels I have read in a long time. Jenna Bayley-Burke delivers it all, romance, humor, and great chemistry between her hero and heroine. It is so well written. The pace is great, and the story line fantastic." - Fallen Angel Reviews
"The sexual tension between Sophie and David will leave you biting your nails in frustration and wanting to yell at them to get on with it already, but once the two finally get together the sparks between the two fly off the pages. With sensual love scenes, flirty repartee, and a man and woman clearly meant to be together, you get everything you could ever want in a romance novel. Overall, I have to say that Compromising Positions is a must read !" - Long and Short Reviews

Caribbean Crush *first look*

Kristin pulled her clothes from the bicycle saddle bag, then wrapped the pleated navy skirt over her hips and buttoned it in place. It always struck her as funny that riding in sporting briefs was acceptable, but whenever she dared do the same in a skirt her mother would get phone calls. The rich and famous thought the island offered ultimate privacy, but in reality it was just one big village. From Anguillita to Snake Point and Blowing Point Harbor to The Valley, locals couldn’t make a move without notice.

“Goverdomme!” The deep voice clubbed her over the back of the head, freezing her in place with her arms half in her blue gingham blouse. Her stomach tumbled in recognition, so she sucked it in as she turned to face her own personal demon.

**

Antonnis tossed a half-smile at Kristin, wishing he hadn’t been caught like a peeping Tom. But the giant lizard at his feet had to have cousins in the Paleolithic. He’s seen dogs smaller than this behemoth. If the row of green spikes running along the back of the beast weren’t enough, he had a grotesque turkey waddle under his block head and whipped his tail against the ground like a…well, a whip.

“Don’t move.” Kristin made her way to him, her gingham blouse undone and making her look like a very naughty Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Goodness knew she always sent him over the rainbow.

“He’s planning on making my foot his supper.” The thing puffed up its red waddle like a balloon and started bobbing its head.

“More likely he’s thinking of mating with you.” She knelt down at his feet and peered at the creature, then let out a low whistle. The iguana froze, and then turned tail and ran beneath a scrubby bush.

Kristin sighed and straightened, buttoning her blouse with rapid precision. She was his favorite memory of the island, and he’d hoped to find her here. Though he figured by now she would have moved on, married and had a handful of babies. Her bare fingers and slender, willowy figure had him wondering just when her plans for her future had changed.

“It’s rather brown for a green iguana.” She cast him a smile so fake he furrowed his brow in disbelief. “They washed up here a few years back after a bad hurricane season. I thought it might be one of our native species. They’ve become endangered since the sister species arrived. Competition, hybridization, all that.”

She turned and walked back to her bike like they were strangers. As if the precocious girl he’d known, full of goofy grins and giggles, had never existed. He pocketed his phone and followed her, unease increasing with each step. He called out her name, but she didn’t turn. Instead, she released her blonde hair from its ponytail, golden tresses streaked with sunshine falling down her back.

“Kristin?” he asked again, not sure how to proceed. He always knew the next two steps, and yet she had him on the edge of a cliff. “Are you here for the wedding rehearsal or were you looking for me?”

Caribbean Casanova *first look*

Harm fell in step beside his brother, helping to secure the schooner to the dock. Once Sassy and her models were delivered to the bungalows, he could wash his hands of the whole mess. Trouble disembarked first, leaping into his brother’s arms as if they’d been separated for years instead of weeks. He looked down and shook his head, hoping he’d get used to the sight eventually.

Something hot and solid crashed into his chest, the scent of honeysuckle surrounding him a second before the woman who pounced on him crossed her arms behind his neck and wrapped her legs around his hips. Harm grabbed her waist on instinct, looking into naughty hazel eyes fringed with long dark lashes.

“Play along,” she whispered through her wicked smile.

Her soft lips were on his in an instant, parting slightly to fit against his mouth. Who was he to turn down such a succulent invitation?

He opened and she responded in kind, the sweet taste of cinnamon making the kiss all the more delicious. He slid his tongue along hers and she sucked in a breath, her body tensing around him. She pulled back a bit, capturing his lower lip between her teeth.

He leaned in, wanting that mouth back on his. She denied him, releasing his lip and sliding down his body until her feet touched the dock.

“You need to shave, Casanova.” She winked, her mahogany eyes dancing with mischief before she turned and walked away.

As she made her way towards the bikini-clad women stepping off the boat, he tried to place her. She looked familiar, but not in a been-there-done-that way. He had a feeling he should know who she was, but for the life of him he couldn’t recall.

He looked to Joe for a clue, but he and Sassy were still attached at the face. No help there. But also no reaction. Had they missed the entire kiss?
His mystery woman herded the bikinis and their baggage to one side, the trio of scrawny men in head-to-toe black to another. Hadn’t they checked the weather before coming to the Caribbean?

Two hairless dudes in Speedos appeared on the deck from below, helping Saskia’s father, Dutch, hoist large black boxes off his boat. Harm stepped in to help, not wanting the older man to hurt himself. Manscaped One and Two he could care less about. He’d never understand the American abhorrence of body hair.

“Holly, we can’t possibly work today.” The scrawniest of the men in black leaned against luggage, his face flushed and shiny.

“The sunset shots will be brilliant tonight.” His new playmate spoke with an attractive air of authority.

Holly. Saskia’s best friend and business partner. His gut clenched.

Yes, they had met before, in a rather embarrassing way.
