ENOUGH OF THAT!

Goodness. I've been much too writerly lately. Maybe some people can put a pin in how they interject emotion into their writing. I can't. So...that's where I am with that.

Now...I'm just going to keep writing what I want to read and stop stressing about sales and all that jazz for a bit. Well, at least until I hear back from my lovely editor.

I subbed some more shorts off, and am going to work on The Cinderella Complex for a bit, still brewing an idea for the HQ American first chapter contest. And a few plots for Medicals...which my agent thinks would be a good idea for me to write. We'll see.

Risking Emotional Suicide

Long-Lost FatherStill on my 'write with emotion' kick, I followed Shirley Jump's advice from her article (see yesterday's post) and checked out Melissa James' Emotional Depth Workshop, which she handily keeps on her website for clueless folks like me. It was great, not sure I can tackle deep POV in the way she suggests, but we both write tons of drafts and grudgingly worship Lori Foster's one draft abilities. It's a great workshop. Check it out.

But better than the workshop is a single article, Risking Emotional Suicide. She opens up about selling...and then not. About getting rejected over and over and not realizing why. Sound like anyone you know? (Shush. I'm talking.) What she discovered is that she poured herself into the books that sold and held back from the ones that didn't. The published stories were part of her, and the others, just stories. Like me, she had a lovely editor (heck it could be the same one) who encouraged her to do what she did best. But it was up to her to figure out what that was.

In analyzing the books that sold versus the ones that didn't she saw a pattern. Some were deeply personal, and others, while technically great, she held back from. Wow. No writer wants to look themselves in the mirror that closely.

Just One Spark was extremely liberating because I wrote it for no one else. Sure, I hoped it would be published, but I wasn't writing to market. I was writing to expunge retail angst, to deal with people who want the best for you and go about it the wrong way, about being terrified of saying what you mean and commiting emotional suicide.

Cooking Up A Storm was fueled by my passion for cooking, and for finding that one person you can be yourself with. I hid behind that food, and the quippy language for all I was worth, but the fear of rejection was too harsh not to be tempered by something.

While the others? I talked here about being openly scared of elements of losing control in Par For the Course, and in dealing with eating disorders because I think they've been done poorly in other places...but I went there. Still, no sale. Stripped dealt with verbal abuse and neglect, and the repercussions in adulthood. The funny bits were justto get me through, I can't write a weepy. I don't like to read them. And you have to read a book a dozen or so times befor eyour editor ever gets it. So...I only moderatly want to go there. I only want to write something Iw would be willing to read. I know that more emotion doesn't have to mean more tears...but I don't know how to do it any other way yet. I've liked very book I've written so far.

Too honest? Maybe I should look at that for my next book. I'm honest to a fault, sometimes called an amazing lack of tact. Which hurts me terribly at times. But do I really want to go there?

Do I really want to sell another book? I might have to go there in order to make that happen.

Get the Tissues Ready, it’s Going to be an Emotional Ride

I’m still in love with the articles in Romance Writers Report. Shirley Jump’s article about writing with emotion really resonated with me on two levels.

One…I don’t wanna. I hate to read books that make me cry. I’d rather not, thank you very much. I’ll take a misty eyes moment or two, but actual tears? I can cry on my own. Make me laugh instead.

Two… Everybody is doing it. Forget parnormals and erotica, EMOTION is the trend. Case in point? The author of this article on emotion is a VERY FUNNY writer. So are many of the authors she quoted.

Dang. I have to get over number one and embrace reality. “You have to embrace parts of yourself you’d prefer to leave alone.” If I have to…

Kate Douglas likens deepening emotion in your stories to emotional foreplay. “There’s got to be emotional foreplay just as you’d build sexual tension in a story.” Tanya Michaels likens “throwing in last minute bad news just for the heightened drama” to cheating. Oops. No wonder that book was rejected. I tried to up emotion with melodrama. Never a good idea.

Thankfully “a little levity is necessary to balance deeply emotional scenes." Karen Templeton agrees, feeling that “the juxtaposition of humor and more gut-wrenching emotion makes each stand out more clearly.”

This article has really stuck with me as I wait to hear back from my editor on 4 emotional ideas…well, 3 now that I realize one was melodrama…and write on the purposely plotless Cinderella Complex.

Off to do as Shirley Jump suggested and work through Melissa James online The Emotional Depth Article Series. But before I bail, what do you like to read? Heavy emotion or light stories? What do you naturally tend towards in your writing? I’m obviously a ‘go for the joke’ girl. How do you balance humor and levity with getting an emotional punch to your stories?

Back To School - with Barnes & Noble U!

I LOVE Barnes & Noble University. Free classes, online format means you can log on anytime, and I'll admit that I miss school. I'd be a professional student if I could afford it. In my list of things to do with my earnings from writing is to go back and get my doctorate...I even have a thesis mapped out about Fan Fiction. Where was I? Oh yes, B&N U.

Each class is a month long, so this term I'm taking:
  • Homeschooling Your Children - I don't plan on homeschooling, but a friend who homeschools always knows the BEST websites and activities. I'm thinking this course will show me how to find those things.
  • Walking Through Shakespeare: The Comedies - I read Delicious by Julie Cohen and was apalled by my lack of Shakespeare knowledge. I'll take this, then treat myself to seeing one of the plays at the Shakespeare Festival next summer.
  • Learn Wine Basics - I've had a wine book brewing for years. Wait, wine doesn't brew. Fermenting? Nah, that doesn't sound good.

Strange things I want

My writing goals are bizarre. I realized this today - OK, I've always known. But it's hitting me now. I know the cover for Cooking Up A Storm is coming...and I am praying for a Christmas tree. I want a Christmas tree cover. I always buy those books as stocking stuffers...and I want to be one. I also want a book with Cinderella in the title. Uh-oh. Are there any Cinderella titles left?

The Cinderella Rules, The Cinderella Hour, The Cinderella Deal, The Cinderella Mission , Cinderella for a Night , The Cinderella Plan ... get my drift? Hmmm. The Cinderella Complex is not taken...yet. And I want it. I must finish this book.

Book? Thought I was waiting to hear back from the lovely editor on my four synopses? Come on, y'all know I'm a brat. I thought...if I can finish a book while waiting to hear back...then I'll feel like Miss Smarty Pants. And hey, maybe it will sell. If not...I'll be a five time rejectee instead of a 4 time. Still my crown...though I think it must be truly ugly. Puce and stinky. But it is mine and I must relish every accomplishment.

You know what else I want? A bare male torso cover. Yummy. A chubby hero. Go on, tell me I can't. A funny sex in public scene where the couple actually does get caught. That wil be a riot!

OK. Enough procrastinating. Camping was a bust (don't ask. Don't.) so I'm writing this weekend. Watch me go!
